Teaching Innovation Activities

  • MOOC – Engineering fundamentals for Urban Mobility. Massive Online Open Course. Innovation teaching project. Available at https://mooc.upc.edu. In 2005 we created a short online course to help prospective students to the Master in Urban Mobility to prepare for the mandatory courses in their first year. This course was specially addressed to those students without an engineering background who were admitted in the master.
  • Platoon Demonstration App. The app consists in the representation of a one-directional freeway stretch (500m long) with two lanes. One lane is for CAVs platoons only (dedicated lane) and the other for regular vehicles (human driven). https://upc-platoon.herokuapp.com/. We developed this App during 2022 within the PLATOON project.
  • Traffic Data Visualization App. This tool computes traffic data aggregations in two different ways: i. According to Edie’s generalized definitions and following the procedures described in Cassidy & Coifman (2007); ii. According to the common biased procedure typically used in Traffic Management Centers (TMC). https://upc-traffic-data.herokuapp.com/.We developed this App during 2022 within the PLATOON project.
  • Freeway capacity drop demonstration with the rice experiment. Could freeway access control increase capacity? Rice and cars… what they have in common? Look at the rice experiment to illustrate the “capacity drop” phenomenon in traffic and the effects of control. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RS3fdpLOD3A. Recorded in class during 2020.
  • Traffic shockwaves in a trajectories diagram. This simulation represents a traffic stream in a map of trajectories on the time-space plane and illustrates the concept of shock-waves and their role in the prediction of the queue propagation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fn3HMAaEfcQ.We developed this recording during 2020 within the COOP project.
